Tuesday, August 24, 2010. Coniferous forests in Minnesota, also known as tiaga or boreal, were sculpted by glaciers, and are home to not only coniferous trees, but also peatlands. They rely on natural disturbances such as fires or blowdowns for regeneration. The Prairie Grassland in southwestern Minnesota today represents only 1 percent of the potholes that once covered the region. Most potholes were drained to create agricultural land.
